The engraving is considered the first Italian engraving depicting a dream and the first to groped the representation of a night vision and its interpretation is still an enigma today. The traditional title of the work refers to the hypothesis of the invention attributed to Raffaello Sanzio, but the critics found a Giorgione's matrix and drawing. Titian also used in some work the poses of the two women.
